Canning

Canning is a simple and fun way to make stripes and plaids on fabric using textile pigments. It is a perfect way to refurbish old canvas chairs and lounges, or simply to make yardage for pillows or tablecloths.
The process works best on heavy, tightly woven fabrics that won't move as you pass the cans across the fabric, canvas is ideal.

Materials:

Smooth flat work surface: homosote covered with felt, masonite.
Canvas
Textile pigments and extender
Collection of different size cans, or PVC tubing, diameter of can becomes width of stripe.
Heavy craft paper
Masking tape
Containers for color mixing
Spoons
Paper towels
T pins, or staples
Surgical gloves
Cardboard
Brushes for touch up
Fabric chalk

Tools:

Scissors
Staple gun
Sewing machine
Long straight edge

Directions:

1. Cut fabric slightly larger than size of chair cover, or desired fabric piece.

2. Iron flat, pin, staple or tape to board.

3. Tape over all edges, attaching large pieces of craft paper to the ends of canvas.

4. Cut both ends off cans, trim any sharp pieces or sand ends of PVC tubing.

5. Cut pieces of cardboard slightly larger than your cans.

6. Mix textile colors. If you like you may want to find reference material for desired color combinations. Print small samples of color combinations before printing final project.

7. Place can on craft paper at the end of fabric and fill with textile pigment.

8. Move the can across the length of the canvas all the way to the other end.

9. Do not pick up the can or stop moving it. You can make straight stripes or wiggles or plaids, experiment with drawing with the can. If you wish you may draw guidelines on fabric with fabric chalk.

10. Slide the can off surface onto a cardboard square and drain excess pigment back into its container.

11. When finished, let dry overnight then iron (no steam) to set textile pigments.

12. Hem or finish fabric as needed.

Tips:

* Keep can full
* Do not stop, keep can moving
* Steady, even, medium pressure
