Arid Containers

For gardeners on the run, succulent plants that can withstand dry conditions are ideal container plants. And while most people think of cacti when they think of succulents, there are many other succulents worth considering.

Succulents have water retaining leaves, stems, and roots that appear almost fleshy, which help them adapt to arid climates and dry soil conditions. Surprisingly, succulents are hardy in a variety of areas, including those with cold winters. Some sedum are hardy to Zone 3 or 4 , although they die to the ground in winter. And others such as some members of the Crassula family are hardy into Zone 9 or 10. Some plants we suggest for your arid container include:

Echeveria species
Senecio species
Crassula species
Sedum species
