If you have ever whiled away an evening looking up at the night sky, it is easy to understand why through out time, people have been fascinated by the stars. Cindy Treen's veneer constellation lampshade brings a taste of the night sky onto your porch or into your living room.
Materials:
Adhesive Styrene
Tools:
Ruler and fabric tape measure
Directions:1. Cut a 1-yard length of seam binding. Trim one end with a 45-degree angle. Put a thin bead of glue about 3-inches long onto one of the rings. Smooth glue out on surface. Lay angle-cut end of seam binding lengthwise onto ring at start of glue. Wrap seam binding (from left to right) around ring at a sharp angle so seam-binding overlaps itself slightly with each wrap. Add more glue in the same manner as needed, and continue wrapping seam binding until ring is completely covered. 2. Cutting Veneer and Styrene: 3. Wrap the 38-inch length of styrene snugly around the washer top ring so it is flush with the top edge of the styrene. Hold the washer top ring and styrene seam overlap in place with clip style paper fasteners. Repeat to attach the bottom ring. With a mat knife, score lightly through the paper backing of the styrene along the seam line where it overlaps. Remove the paper fasteners to separate the styrene from the rings. Peel off the section of paper backing (about 3-inches X 12-inches) where the styrene overlapped to reveal adhesive. Wrap the styrene into a tube and attach it end to end with the 3-inch adhesive overlap. 4. Peel off several inches of the remaining paper backing from the styrene tube. Center and attach one end of the veneer to the seam line of the styrene so the veneer end abuts the overlapped end of the styrene. Gradually peel back the paper in sections and attach the veneer to the styrene tube making sure it is square and not shifting as you wrap it. The edges of the styrene and veneer should stay flush all the way around. 5. Glue the veneer overlap down with either Tacky glue or a quick dry epoxy (Epoxy may require more time to dry and require clamping). 6. Slip the rings into the shade so they are snug and positioned at the top and bottom edge of the veneer tube. Wrap painter's tape around the top and bottom edge of the veneer tube 1/8-inch from the edge. Cut a length of seam binding long enough to wrap around the veneer tube with a 2-inch overlap. Working in sections, use a small brush to paint a thin layer of glue on the edge of the veneer above the painters tape. Lay the seam tape onto the glue line. Continue gluing and adding seam binding until you have reach your starting point. Repeat on the other ring. 7. Using the small brush, brush glue onto the top ring and press down the seam-binding overhang attaching it to the ring. Repeat to attach the bottom ring. 8. Cut constellation printout into individual constellations. Attach each cut out on top of the completed shade and tape the corners in place. Drill small holes through the stars in varying sizes. Take off the print out and lightly sand the surface. Tape off the fabric binding with painter's tape and spray the shade with spray lacquer. 9. Put the shade on a lamp base or have it wired as a pendant lamp.
