Mini Ecosystems

Materials:

Glass containers, such as an old aquarium or a 2-gallon jar
Pebbles, activated charcoal, sphagnum moss
Potting mix
Assorted terrarium plants, such as ferns, baby tears, moss, pitcher plants, orchid and club mosses.
Miniature figurines, shells or other decorative elements
Spray mister

Tools:

Chopsticks or long tweezers
Long handled spoon
Scissors
Paper funnel

Directions:

1. Clean glass container and add 1-2 inches of pebbles for drainage, a thin layer of activated charcoal for filter, and a thin layer of sphagnum moss to keep soil from infiltrating filter.

2.  Using a paper funnel, add potting mix.  Build up soil where desired by using paper funnel to direct placement of potting mix.  Hills and valleys can be created to add visual interest.  Place plants in terrarium but do not dig beneath the moss layer.  Leave enough room for plants to grow above the soil line.

3. Use long handled tools and tweezers to adjust placement of plants.

4. Add statues, ornaments, or figurines, as desired.

5. Water lightly to moisten soil and mist plants.

6. Cover with glass lid or clear material.

7. Place mini ecosystem in a bright location where it will receive indirect light.  If terrarium dries out, mist as needed.
