Nuts for the Garden

People don't always think about nuts as something easy to grow, but there are many nuts which we can grow in our own back yards.

Ernie Grimo has a nut tree nursery in Niagara on the Lake, Canada specializing in native species. One if his favorite nuts is the heartnut which is actually in the walnut family, but even more delicious.

Some of the nuts that can be grown in most parts of the U.S. are pecan, American chestnut, butternut, walnuts, hickories, hazelnuts, gingko, and pine nuts. Ernie's recommendation for a good nut to start with is the hazelnut, hardy, easy to grow and is decorative as a shrub or hedge.
