Like a good, firm handshake this stone door knocker offers a hearty announcement of guests who have come a-calling, whether expected or just dropping by. An inexpensive diamond bit makes the process of drilling stone surprisingly easy and may have uses beyond this project as found stones can also make fun drawer pulls. Materials:One round or oval stone (for door knocker), about 4-8 inches long, and an inch thick Tools:3/16" diamond drill bit Directions:1. Use felt pen to mark location for hook in the center of top quarter of large stone. Fashion a jig to hold the stone securely in place while drilling hole by clamping plywood piece over stone such that hole is aligned with pen mark. 2. Spray water through wood hole so that stone is wet before beginning to drill. Put on dusk mask. Begin drilling with the diamond bit, spraying with water as necessary to cool bit. Lift bit from time to time to remove stone dust. Once hole is started, remove plywood piece and jig. 3. Holding rock in place by hand, continue drilling using light pressure and a very low speed. Lubricate stone with spray bottle or by place it in a water bath. Periodically clean out center of the bit with an awl and chip out any of the center core (left by bit) in hole. Continue drilling, lubricating and removing stone particles until bit breaks through other side of stone 4. Use length of sturdy cord to make a loop from which to hang stone. If preferred, braid several pieces of twine to make cord more decorative, then loop braid through hole in rock and tie neatly together. Set aside. 5. To make hook for knocker, drill a 3/16-inch hole in center of small rock to a depth of about 3/8". 6. Cut head of a wood screw off with a hack saw. Epoxy cut end into hole in smaller rock. Allow to dry. 7. Predrill hole in door to attach pebble hook. Screw pebble hook into door. Hang knocker from hook. Special Thanks: |
