Shellfish populations have faced many challenges in recent years. Natural populations have declined due to large scale over fishing, coastal development and pollution. Perry Raso, from Matunuck Oyster Farm, has turned to farming shellfish in an effort to provide for the dining table. Matunuck Oyster Farm raises oysters in the salt ponds of Southern Rhode Island. They introduce young bay scallops into the wild to help replenish native stocks. Hard and soft shelled clams are also harvested and sold to local markets and restaurants.
