Flags and banners are a popular decorative element in any backyard, and the garden is a great place to find inspiration for making your own flags. Flowers, leaves and dragonflies are perfect motifs for announcing seasonal changes or events.
Materials:Nylon yardage, assorted colors.Fabric glue Vellum Black sharpie Leaves, drawings or Xeroxed reference material of motifs Flag pole Common pins Masonite or other smooth, hard work surface
Tools:Craft soldering iron with chisel pointMetal straight edge Triangle
Directions:1. Measure the width and height of your flagpole; this determines the size of your flag.
2. Using a metal straight edge measure and draw the shape of your flag onto the nylon fabric with a pencil, use the triangle for square corners. This is the base cloth for your flag. 3. To allow for a casing for flagpole draw line at the top of base cloth slightly wider than the diameter of your flag pole, this will be the fold line. 4. Choose a motif for your flag; this may be a picture or actual foliage from your garden, and trace onto vellum with the black sharpie. 5. Xerox the motif onto large format paper and enlarge to desired size. 6. Tape the Xerox to your work surface and lay nylon fabric over the motif. 7. Draw over the outline of the motif with the chisel point of soldering iron. 8. Lay out your motif(s) on top of the base cloth and pin in place. 9. Turn edges over and apply fabric glue along edges of motifs and press down onto the base cloth. 10. Make casing by folding top edge of fabric to the backside of base cloth along fold line. Glue or stitch along edge and insert flagpole.
